Learning through play and curiosity - TRE®

As an educator of young children, I have always been fascinated by play. The curiosity children show within the classroom often has a direct correlation with their social and emotional wellbeing. Happy and safe children generally feel free to explore, experiment and make mistakes. Positive Early Years educators focus on social engagement - playing alongside and engaging with the children in their care to support their learning. TRE® practitioners work in the same sphere of safety-creation and social engagement, supporting clients to provide good news to the nervous system, not only through the shaking, but also through the engagement and grounding which are core elements of the practice.
What if we reframed curiosity in a body-based context?
Curiosity is often painted as a cerebral dimension - mental gymnastics to solve problems, grow through experience and learn. However, what if we reframed curiosity within a body-based context?
There is much to be explored within the body - we are not just a physical body with a brain attached - the place where all the thinking, or essentially the 'magic', happens. The body is our home, our physical being and by exploring its responses through practices such as TRE®, we can learn so much - no matter what our age. I have worked with children aged under 16 through to people who are into their 80s. All these clients have found a new calmness and connection through TRE®.
By slowing down the body, we can slow down thoughts.
By slowing down the body we can slow down thoughts, giving us time to wonder and be playful. Shaking can be the source of connection, joy and release. It's not only a practice that helps to release experiential tension and trauma held within the body but also allows us to connect to our body. Noticing changes in the body, and how you feel as a result, is powerful. It is through engaging with how our body supports us with its protective responses (e.g. flight-flight, freeze) that we can reframe our relationship with our body and find glimmers of joy and safety.
